Cannabis 101: A Guide to Eating Cannabis Safely

November 11, 2020

What if the best way to get high didn't involve a joint or vape?

More and more marijuana fans are discovering the joys of eating cannabis. Unfortunately, plenty who partake still don't know what makes this activity so special.

So, why should you try eating cannabis, and how can you do so safely? Keep reading to discover the answers!

Why Try Eating Cannabis?

We've put together a comprehensive guide to eating cannabis safely. Before we go any further, though, we need to answer a more basic question: why should someone eat cannabis in the first place?

The first reason is convenience. You may not always be able to easily smoke a joint or fire up a vape. In these scenarios, eating the weed is a safe and easy alternative.

The second reason is that you can more easily control your own dosage. With things like edible capsules, you can control exactly how much THC and CBD enters your body. Moreover, you can experiment with different ratios and different terpene profiles to find what works best for you.

The third and best reason, though, is the joy of variety. Eating cannabis is a bit like eating your meals each day. And the ability to change up those meals (or in this case, change up how you consume cannabis) can create an entirely new experience each and every time.

Now that we have reviewed different reasons you may want to consume cannabis, let's dive into the different ways you can do so safely.

Drink It In a Tea

When you want to relax, a good cup of tea can help you wind down. And if you want to relax even further, tea with cannabis extracts can take that relaxation to the next level.

Part of the fun is controlling how much cannabis you add and deciding on the best way to put it in your tea. For example, you can take the quickest path by dissolving some cannabutter directly into your tea. This lets you control the dosage while ensuring the final product tastes great.

Worried about getting a little too high? You can steep the herbs in order to remove some of the psychoactive ingredients of the tea. In this way, you can control how intense your experience ultimately is.

Pop An Edible

Are you in a hurry, or maybe you just don't want to fiddle with things like cannabutter and tea? In that case, you can simply pop an edible.

Edibles are very convenient, and they come in a variety of different forms. This includes simple edible capsules to things like THC gummies and brownies.

Pretty much anything you can do with food, you can do with an edible. That means you can buy or prepare edibles that are kosher or even vegan-friendly.

As an added bonus, edibles usually lead to a far longer-lasting high than methods such as smoking or vaping cannabis. This can give you a more potent experience, but you need to be careful about how much you consume.

Using Tinctures

Getting high via tinctures may sound like a throwback to the Victorian era. In reality, though, this gives you many different options and much control over your experience.

The most basic way to consume tinctures is to place a few drops under your tongue (the fancy term for this is "sublingual"). This quickly spreads the drug throughout your body, making it a great solution if you are short on time.

However, you can do much more than this with tinctures. For example, you can put the tincture directly into your coffee or tea to spice things up. While you won't feel the effects quite as quickly, tinctures represent a great opportunity to put a new spin to your favorite drinks and even your favorite foods!

Cannabis Coffee

At first, the idea of cannabis coffee may sound like a contradiction. After all, most people use coffee to stimulate themselves and cannabis to help relax. But it turns out to be a hell of a combination!

You can use different kinds of cannabis within your coffee to achieve different effects. For instance, putting stimulating Sativa in your coffee instead of mellow Indica can help you feel awake and energized much more than coffee alone.

Alternatively, you can mix indicate in and achieve the best of both worlds. The caffeine in coffee will help you stay up for things like parties and social gatherings. At the same time, the Indica will help you mellow out and achieve the "socially lubricated" effect, all without you having to taste a drop of alcohol.

Juice It

Cannabis has an unfair reputation as a drug for lazy people. But it's quite the opposite: recent studies have determined that cannabis users are less obese than non-users, and 80% of people surveyed in a different study use cannabis before or after working out.

But what does this have to do with eating cannabis? If you're a healthy person, you probably have a healthy love of juices instead of unhealthy sodas. And there are multiple ways you can combine your love or juice with your love of cannabis.

As we mentioned before, you can add cannabis directly to juice or other beverages by putting tincture drops inside your drink. Others prefer to juice the cannabis directly along with other ingredients, although this leads to less of a high.

If you're feeling ambitious, you can also whip yourself up a cannabis smoothie by adding tincture drops into your preferred smoothie blend. This gives you all the benefits of cannabis with all of the health benefits of a good smoothie.
